Gameplay semantics for authoring adaptivity in mobile games

چکیده
Using procedural content generation (PCG) in game development can contribute to further engage players in more fun, balanced and richer gameplay. An adaptive game can achieve this by: (i) distinguishing its players’ interaction [3], and (ii) accordingly adapting game elements, using PCG [4]. We investigated adaptive mobile PCG methods with a case study on 7’s Wild Ride, a game developed at the Entertainment Technology Center of Carnegie Mellon University. We changed the original game to include a player-dependent PCG-based dynamic difficulty adjustment (DDA), and concluded that it indeed keeps the game evenly balanced for anyone, contributing to attract and retain the typical wider audience of casual mobile players. In this paper, we describe the role that gameplay semantics have in supporting this DDA mechanism, specifically by allowing designers to control PCG methods directly, thus effectively authoring adaptivity.

Creating social, physical, and authoring games
Computer games have become increasingly cooperative social activities that are often being played with several collocated gamers, frequently in front of spectators who react and participate in the gameplay experience. Physical controllers are enriching the gaming interface by allowing players to use their bodies to control the game. We highlight another gameplay theme: in-game authorship of con...
متن کاملAdaptivity in Educational Games: Including Player and Gameplay Characteristics
The use of educational games for teaching and training is nowadays well-known, although its effectiveness in terms of learning and motivation has not been firmly corroborated. A first reason for this is that research on instructional design research often does not reach the fields of game development and game design. Consequently, instructional design principles that have proven to be effective...
متن کاملSocial comics: a casual authoring game
We present Social Comics, a casual video game that allows players to act in short comic strips that they create. We designed Social Comics to be a fast paced game that engages the audience and players equally, in an effort to adapt it for parties and social gatherings. We motivate Social Comics with a design framework for video games that combines three gameplay elements: sociability, physicali...
متن کاملMobile adaptive procedural content generation
The nature of most modern mobile games is different from that of most computer/console games, which are typically targeted at casual gamers and are played in a wide variety of space, time and device contexts. We argue that this feature of mobile games naturally fits with adaptive procedural content generation (PCG). In this paper, we propose the integration of two PCG-based approaches (experien...
متن کاملAuthoring emergent narrative-based games
In this article, we address the particular issue of authoring interactive narrative with respect to video-games and interactive storytelling. We first introduce the narrative paradox between interactivity and narrative content in virtual environments and consider its impact on game design and development. We then introduce the concept of the Emergent Narrative (EN) and the particular philosophy...
